I think the following two quotes from Zen Master Lin Chi say it all:
… they’re all so much old toilet paper to wipe away filth. The Buddha is a phantom body, the patriarchs are nothing but old monks… If you seek the Buddha, you’ll be seized by the Buddha devil… As long as you seek something it can only lead to suffering. Better to do nothing.
And,
Just act ordinary, without trying to do anything particular. Move your bowels, piss, get dressed, eat your rice, and if you get tired, then lie down. Fools may laugh at me, but wise men will know what I mean.
Stop trying to do everything. By doing so, you are going nowhere. Stick to the simple things, and do them for real. Only this way can you get somewhere.
