Resistance Levels

When it comes to resistance levels, the Proform 785 F offers the Silent Magnetic Resistance (SMR) of exactly 20 levels. This means that the user can increase the level of resistance of their workout, depending on the workout program that they are on. In addition to this, the elliptical trainer works efficiently and silently with very little noise, regardless of the resistance level that is set.

Display

It has the Clearview Backlit display, on which a person can read off the elapsed time for a workout session, pulse, as well as resistance levels, all of which are displayed on the screen. This is very effective in helping a person track their fitness achievements, and advancements towards their fitness goals.

Pre-programmed workouts

The Proform 785 F comes with 14 recorded workout programs, and clearly the user can be spoiled for choice when it comes to deciding which program to use. In addition to these personal trainer workouts, it also has six more targeted programs for weight loss, to ensure a maximized workout experience, especially for users who enjoy a variety in workout routines.

Incline and Stride Adjustment

The incline can be adjusted for someone looking to pick up the pace of the workout, with the patented Power Intensity Ramp, to deliver a more challenging workout. Therefore the user can dial up and engage in a more physical workout, or the user can dial down and have a normal daily routine workout that is not too strenuous.

Warranty

This elliptical trainer comes with a brake warranty of seven years, one year warranty for the parts of the trainer as well as the labor to maintain it. The frame however, has a lifetime warranty. Thus a purchase once made, is not the end of the matter, since the machine can receive regular maintenance for up to one year.

Price and Value

Although it is currently unavailable in various online shopping platforms such as Amazon, the Proform 785 F had a price tag of 449.00 US dollars, which is a good price for a person looking to spend little money and save more on cost, since there are more expensive models in the market. Depending on what a person is looking for in an elliptical trainer, it can be a great purchase or a sub-par professional workout machine. This is to say, that it can be a good elliptical trainer on a home individual level, but can fail to offer the much needed consistency if it was used in a gym in a more professional capacity.

Euclid on Weightlifting: There Are Many Roads Up the Mountain of GainZ – None of Them Are “Royal”

Eli-Quads-Wide-Weightlifting-Academy

“There is no royal road to geometry.” — Euclid

In ancient times, there were (as the stories go) “royal roads” that only the kings could travel on. They were glorified short-cuts, making travel from one place to another faster and easier if you happened to be royalty.

According to legend, Euclid was sponsored by Ptolemy I Soter (“Ptolemy the Savior”), a Macedonian general of Alexander the Great who became ruler of Egypt.

Ptolemy thought Euclid’s Elements — one of the most important books ever written by anyone, anywhere —was too hard. So he asked him if there was a way to learn the material easier.

Euclid then gave his famous response, “There is no Royal Road to Geometry.” In other words, the only way to get good is to do the work. Being a pretty-pretty princess (or Ptolemy) doesn’t change that.

Beginners to weightlifting — to anything — are in a constant search for the magic road, the secret, the special something that will make their journey faster and easier. Too bad. You ain’t royalty, and even if you were, there are no royal roads to GainZville.

However, there ARE many different roads! There are LOTS of roads up to the top of the mountain — many ways to practice and learn geometry; many ways to practice and learn weightlifting. What matters is that you pick one, walk the whole way up, doing the work, embracing the process.

Unfortunately, what beginners do is they take a little piece of one road, a little piece of another, a slice of another, and then wonder why they never get anywhere.

What matters is that the road you are on is GOING somewhere. It does NOT matter if every step along the way is beautiful, if the cobble stones are shiny enough, or if the smell of the flowers is aromatic and to your liking. By cobbling together little bits of different roads — without any sense of where each of them was going, or how they were getting there — the beginner builds for themselves a road to nowhere.

Process is the fundamental “secret” to success — in anything. It’s not about the “sets” or “reps”. It’s not about “percentages of your max”. It’s not about whether you learn the snatch or the clean first. Etc. The POINT is to find a road (a process) and follow that road through to the finish.

Coaches, like me, don’t have all of the answers. Hell, we barely have ANY answers! But what we strive to have is a road that you can follow to reach the top of the mountain. I have no idea if my road is the “best” road. But I am trying to make it the best possible road I can. (You’ll notice how my programs and progressions tend to change over time.)

My job is to be a road builder — I’ll worry about where the road is going, how efficient the path is to the top, how safe and effective the moments along the path will be.

Your job is to be the best road warrior (traveler with a passion) you can be. Take every step with purpose, with quality, with intensity. Royal roads are for wimps…

Now go lift something heavy,
Nick Horton

PS. The picture is of our lifter Eli, or rather, his quads. When people wonder how a little 77kg lifter has squatted 500 pounds, and grown quads like that, they are hoping for a “secret”. The truth is that he squats for 30 to 50 high-quality, hard, technically sound, reps on the squat per day (5 to 7 days per week) PLUS he rides his bike for work PLUS he does lots of extra leg work like reverse lunges, bulgarian split squats, etc PLUS he does all of the mobility training one would expect PLUS he does Olympic lifting PLUS … it keeps going! The only answer worth a damn is: lots of work of very high quality. No royal roads.

You Gotta Get UP to Get DOWN: 3rd-Pull in Weightlifting (Case Study)

Natalie is (very) new to weightlifting. And yet, here she is doing a clean with more than her own bodyweight.

It LOOKS like she “gets under the bar”. But in truth, she PULLS herself under the bar. That distinction is crucial.

The Language of Description vs the Language of Experience

Natalie-3rd-pull-clean-sequence-weightlifting-academy

In the video it LOOKS like she “gets under the bar”. But be careful: She does NOT “drop”; She PULLS herself down.

However, it must be admitted that that is horrible language! To an external observer, she appears to be “going down”. But, to the athlete – from HER perspective – it FEELS exactly like a power clean.

Why? Because a good “full” snatch/clean (I hate that term) FEELS exactly like a power snatch/clean.

Bar UP! Knees UP!1 Everything UP UP UP! … And Blazamo! The observer will see you go DOWN! But YOU won’t FEEL that during the movement.

Examples From the Real World with Real Lifters (from My Team!)

Ryan with 140kg clean:

Emma, like Natalie, also new, hitting a 70kg “squat-free” clean (she cleans it but can’t stand it up, LOL), at a body weight of only 64kg.

Here’s Eli doing a great 3rd-pull with a snatch. It’s 95kg, the most he has hit since he broke his collar bone (he’s done more in the past, but this was a big win). He’s only a 77kg lifter.

Stop using the language of description, start using the language of experience.

Now go lift something heavy,
Nick Horton

  1. I originally learned the “knees up” thang from my friend Dan Bell. I renamed it to a Sumo Stomp (see Instructional Video HERE), to make it sound cool, lol. It’s something that is being done by many of the world’s top lifters. By focusing upon the KNEES going up, you avoid the dreaded “donkey kick”, and put yourself in a near-perfect squat stance in the air. The 2nd pull ENDS your force-into-the-ground phase of lifting. The 3rd pull STARTS your pull-up-on-the-bar-so-that-the-body-will-go-down phase.

Laird Hamilton on the Tim Ferriss Show2

“There is no new idea, just a new application of an old idea.”
– Laird Hamilton

Laird Hamilton (@LairdLife) is widely considered the greatest big wave surfer of all-time and an innovator in board sports. He’s the creator of tow-in surfing, and largely responsible for the rebirth of stand-up paddle boarding.

Hamilton starred in multiple surfing films and was the centerpiece of Riding Giants, a documentary about big wave surfing. A contributing editor for Men’s Journal, he has appeared on Oprah, Charlie Rose, 60 Minutes, and The Ellen Degeneres Show. Laird was also a featured expert in the surfing episode of The Tim Ferriss Experiment.

Laird is known for using his healthy lifestyle to raise money for charities including, Race Across America, Pipeline for a Cure for Cystic Fibrosis, Rain Catcher, and Muscular Dystrophy.

Gabrielle Reece (@GabbyReece) has been named one of the “20 Most Influential Women In Sports,” and is best known for her success in volleyball, modeling, and for a starring role as a trainer on The Biggest Loser.

A volleyball champion and a dominating offensive force, Reece led the Women’s Beach Volleyball league in kills for four consecutive seasons.

MacKenzie created controversy by suggesting a counterintuitive approach to distance running, which challenges high-mileage runs, high-carb diets, and incorporates intense strength training to conquer everything from 5K runs to ultra marathons. He was also prominently featured in The 4-Hour Body where he revealed how to prepare for a marathon in record time.

MacKenzie has been featured in Runner’s World, Men’s Journal, ESPN, Outside, and The Economist.

Language Matters – “Beyond Subjective & Objective in Statistics” – Research Paper

Shakespeare knew what he was doing when he asked, “what’s in a name?” As always, his meaning was double (or more), and the play’s plot gives us a completely different answer than the rhetorical one we usually supply.

Names can matter, not only among love-sick teenagers from xenophobic families, but in science, teaching, and in communication.

In an unpublished paper, Gelman and Hennig propose to change the names, or designations, “Objective” and “Subjective”, in statistics to more meaningful, and less misleading, ones.

Paper — Gelman, Andrew; Hennig, Christian. 2015. “Beyond Subjective and Objective in Statistics“.

Abstract:

We propose to abandon the words “objectivity” and “subjectivity” in statistics discourse and replace each of them with broader collections of attributes, with objectivity replaced by transparency, consensus, impartiality, and correspondence to observable reality, and subjectivity replaced by awareness of multiple perspectives and context-dependence. The advantage of these reformulations is that the replacement terms do not oppose each other. Instead of debating over whether a given statistical method is subjective or objective (or normatively debating the relative merits of subjectivity and objectivity in statistical practice), we can recognize desirable attributes such as transparency and acknowledgement of multiple perspectives as complementary goals. We demonstrate the implications of our proposal with recent applied examples from pharmacology, election polling, and socioeconomic stratification.

More:

One problem is that the terms “objective” and “subjective” are loaded with so many associations and are often used in a mixed descriptive/normative way.

On p-values and the myth of “objectivity” in stats:

… significance testing is used as a tool for a misguided ideology that leads researchers to hide, even from themselves, the iterative searching process by which a scientific theory is mapped into a statistical model or choice of data analysis.

How this connects to falsification:

Falsificationist Bayesianism follows the frequentist interpretation of the probabilities formalized by the sampling model given a true parameter, so that these models can be tested using error statistical techniques (with the limitations that such techniques have, as discussed in Section 5.2). Gelman and Shalizi argue, as some frequentists do, that such models are idealizations and should not be believed to be literally true, but that the scientific process proceeds from simplified models through test and potential falsification by improving the models where they are found to be deficient. This reflects certain attitudes of Jaynes (2003), with the difference that Jaynes generally considered probability models as derivable from constraints of a physical system, whereas Gelman and Shalizi focus on examples in social or network science which are not governed by simple physical laws and thus where one cannot in general derive probability distributions from first principles, so that “priors” (in the sense that we are using the term in this paper, encompassing both the data model and the parameter model) are more clearly subjective.

A central issue for falsificationist Bayesianism is the meaning and use of the parameter prior, which can have various interpretations, which gives falsificationist Bayesianism a lot of flexibility for taking into account multiple perspectives, contexts, and aims but may be seen as a problem regarding clarity and unification.

Gelman has more on what I prefer to call Bayesian Falsification (better name), which I looked at HERE.

Now go lift something heavy,
