Eat the Big Frogs First

There's an old southern saying that sums up my coaching and personal productivity philosophy rather well.

"If you have to eat a plate of frogs, eat the biggest ones first."

As odd (or tasty?) as that might sound, it's great advice. Do the hardest part of a task first, and the rest will breeze by. And even if it doesn't breeze by, at least you got the big thing done.

For instance, stick your squats in the beginning of the workout. Or, commit to an hour every morning to work on your novel before you do anything else. Or, do the dishes before you make yourself something to eat.

If it's a pain in the ass, do it first. If it's important, do it first. What if there is a conflict between important and pain? Bigness is a value judgement and size matters. Choose which is bigger to you.

Now go lift something heavy,

Nick Horton
